Books #2

I went to Disneyland this past weekend. It was awesome. But when I came back from the three-day weekend I found myself buried in work again (and expect to be buried until the end of March). I also seem to have a lot on my plate at the moment. I am currently: finishing up my model for the Asrai model exchange and have to get it out in the post by Monday at the latest, putting together and painting a model for a painting contest that ends the second week of April (I chose the Savage Orc Big Boss so I can work on my blending techniques), painting the second and third units of Dryads for the Bad Dice Podcast painting challenge, trying to put together and paint two more Treekin for the upcoming tournaments, preparing for the next few months of tournaments (I have two in the next three weeks), and working on my last three battle reports from WaaaghPaca (which are going so slow - I really need to pick these up before I go to the Bay Area Open).

So instead of any Warhammer, today I thought I would do another set of quick book reviews of things I have been reading in the last few months. I haven't been reading quite as much I as I would like too as I have been devoting more time to playing and painting - and watching some really good television shows - but I still somehow managed to read a book about every two/three weeks. This is what I have recently finished:

The Great Betrayal, Nick Kyme
This is the first book in the Time of Legends series covering the War of the Beard between the Dwarves and High Elves. It starts off with Malekith and the Dwarf King Snorri battling a world crushing army of Daemons and ends with the Dwarves and High Elves locked in a bitter war that will last decades. It was a good read and I am looking forward to the next book in the series. Although I don't expect it to be available until the end of 2013.

Fear to Tread, James Swallow
This is another book in the Horus Heresy series and is one of my favorites in this later run of the heresy. It provides good background on the Blood Angels and their Primarch and shows the depth of planning that went into Horus' plans in launching his war against humanity. It read quick as there were lots of battles and short, terse descriptions.

Shadows of Treachery, a novel of the Horus Heresy
Another Horus Heresy novel that covers several short stories. Fills in some gaps in the overall story line and provides some interesting insight into certain factions/characters.

Clementine, Cherie Priest
Another Clockwork Century novel. This one delves much more into the use of the airships and the civil war than the previous books. It moved fast and you get a good sense of the characters, but I think the book is less well written than the previous books in the series.

Dead of Night, Jonathan Maberry
Zombies, zombies, and more zombies. A great novel about a zombie outbreak in a small town in our current time. It is written by one of my favorite action authors and has some great dialogue.

21st Century Dead, a zombie anthology
More zombies! This is a great little zombie anthology from a lot of different authors including the creator of Sons of Anarchy and Jonathan Maberry. It read quick and I was not disappointed when I finished as I enjoyed almost all of the stories.

Frozen Heat, Richard Castle
The most recent Nikki Heat novel from the television show Castle. Its a quick mystery read and adds a little flavor to the ongoing novel and television plot, but is something I wouldn't recommend as just a mystery novel.

Storm Front, Jim Butcher
So after many recommendations, I finally started reading the Dresden novels. Once I picked up the first one I couldn't put it down. The novel's writing is not that good (though I have heard it gets much better with each successive book) but the characterizations and rich fantasy world are something I really crave in my luxury reading. I highly recommend this novel to anyone interested in magic, mystery, or fantasy novels.
