Waaagh!Paca 2015: Tournament Rules Overview

The next Warhammer tournament that I will be attending is Waaagh!Paca 2015. This event just gets bigger and better every year and I am really looking forward to three solid days of Warhammer and random shenanigans. This year, Waaagh!Paca will be the host of several different events including: a five-round tournament using 2,000 point armies; the annual mustache contest; hand crafted prizes; the “officially unofficial Friday night tournament;” annual raffle; and freezing cold temperatures.

Waaagh!Paca takes place is Waupaca, WI at the Waupaca Ale House. As I have said previously, the Ale House is one the best Warhammer venues I have ever been too. It is so far off the radar, that the tournament pretty much requires all of the players to stay and hang out in the same hotel/restaurant/bar, which makes for a really fun and close knit tournament.

The “Rulez of da Waaagh” for this year are as follows:
Each player brings an army up to 2,000 points with the following restrictions: all End Times army-wide rules are in effect except for the Chaos Ascension and the End Times magic rules; the Lore of Death is available to all wizards; the 50% Lord and 50% hero point allocation limits are in effect; the Undead Legions, Legions of Chaos, and Elven Legion armies may be taken; all special characters may be taken; Chaos Dwarfs from the Tamurkhan book are allowed; and all unit battle-scrolls are allowed except for Formation Battle-Scrolls and Scrolls of Binding. Each player must also bring a “Man of Intrigue” that will be used in each scenario. Further, all models my be painted to a three color minimum (including any summoned models and the “Man of Intrigue”) and must be WYSIWYG. A player who lacks the basic three color minimum army will be booted from the tournament and barred from all future events.

Additionally, for this year, each player has the option of selecting their preferred play style: either “Hobby Hero” or “The Real Deal.” If you choose “The Real Deal” then you are in it to win it; enough said. If you choose “Hobby Hero” then you are playing for fun. If possible, all “Hobby Heros” will be paired up against each other and each “Hobby Hero” will be able to select a grudge match for both round 1 and round 4 of the tournament. However, if you choose “Hobby Hero” then you are not eligible for either the Best Overall, Best General, or Silver Pumpkin awards and your score will not contribute to your team for the Team award.

The full tournament rules are available here.

Scoring:
Waaagh!Paca uses a 100 point scale for awards available in four separate categories: 25 points for Attendance; 25 points for Battle; 25 points for Appearance; and 25 points for Sportsmanship.

Each player receives the 25 points for attendance simply by showing up and playing both days (though in the past this has managed to trouble a few people who party a little too hard on Saturday night). The 25 battle points can be earned over the course of five games, each worth 5 points each. For the 25 appearance points, there is a specific appearance checklist (where only the best armies can get full points). The full checklist is available here.

The 25 sportsmanship points are a little harder to earn. Each player can earn 5 points for each favorite opponent vote they receive. A player can also earn up to 6 points for participating in various activities throughout the weekend like the mustache contest or the charity raffle. Finally, each player starts the tournament with 14 etiquette points that can be lost throughout the tournament for generally bad behavior like failing to finish a game on time or failing to submit your army list on time. Any player finishing the tournament with less than 15 sportsmanship points will be banned from all further Waaagh!Paca tournaments (something no body wants)!

Team Scoring:
Each year Waaagh!Paca has a team award that is given to the best team of players. For the last two years Leadership 2 (with me included) has received Second Place and this year we are gunning for First! The award is given to the team with the highest overall team score. The base team score is the median player’s score on each team with the following bonuses: +5 points for participating in the opening ceremonies; and +5 point for having a team banner. A team is composed of at least three members.

This year, Waaagh!Paca has several different awards. They are as follows:
  • Best Overall – Most individual points.
  • Best General – Most battle points.
  • Best Sportsman – Most sportsmanship points.
  • Best Appearance – Most appearance points.
  • Best team – Most team points.
  • Silver Pumpkin – Second place overall.
  • Hobby Hero – Most appearance and sportsmanship points for someone with this designation.
  • Joe Rogers Certificate of Achievement Award – self explanatory.
  • Hastings Hangover Award – most hungover player over the weekend.
  • Best Man of Intrigue model – one Award for each category.
  • Player’s Choice – most player army votes.

There are also a few updated rules that will be sued throughout the entire tournament:

Fun with Fortitude (Rules Addendum #1)
The following rules replace the Fortitude paragraph on page 148 of the Warhammer rulebook.
Only units with a starting cost of at least 100 points may generate positive fortitude.
This includes Generals, Battle Standard Bearers, and normal units of models containing a Standard or Champion. Units with a starting cost of 99 points or less can never generate fortitude.

Further, some units generate negative fortitude. During a game, the player subtracts negative fortitude points from their total whenever counting up the Fortitude score. Additionally, the negative fortitude penalty does not go away when the model is destroyed or fled the table. If it matters for the scenario, place a suitable marker where the unit was killed. The unit will forever haunt the spot of the battlefield subtracting precious fortitude points for the rest of the battle. If the unit fled off the table, mark the position where the unit left the table.

The following unit generates two positive Fortitude points:
  • Giants (Only when standing. A Fallen Giant temporarily generates 0 Fortitude)
The following units generate one positive Fortitude point:
  • Army General
  • Battle Standard Bearer
  • Standard Bearers
  • Champions in any core unit (but only if that unit does not have access to a Standard)
  • Monsters that do not have a ward save or regeneration, including Ridden Monsters (Monsters gaining a ward save or regeneration during the battle cease to generate Fortitude while either of those rules are in effect)
The following units generate one negative Fortitude point:
  • Cannons (Dwarfs) and Great Cannons (Empire)
  • Special Characters
The following units generate two negative Fortitude points:
  • Ironblasters, Skull Cannons, Steam Tanks
  • Epidimius, Throgg, Tetto’eko, Morathi and any Special Character 500 points or more

Dogs of War Giants (Rules Addendum #2)
Any army can take up to two Dogs of War giants in their rare slot.

Man of Intrigue (Rules Addendum #3)
The “Man of Intrigue” (“MOI”) is a special marker. In scenarios where the MOI is used, it is placed in the center of the table locked in suitably epic mortal combat with the opponent’s MOI. Unless the scenario indicates otherwise, the models are placed in base contact, as close to center as possible, with your MOI on your half of the table and your opponent’s MOI on their side. The two MOI will remain locked together in “The Duel” for the entire game. The Duel counts as a piece of dangerous terrain but does not otherwise effect movement. Unlike a normal piece of terrain, however, it may move in two situations. If a unit ends its move on the Duel, the opposing player moves the Duel in a straight line until it has cleared a 1” space. Any models the Duel moves through must take a dangerous terrain test. In addition, at the start of each player turn after the first, both players will count their fortitude within 12” of the Duel. The player with the highest Fortitude score within 12” may pivot the Duel in any direction and move it 1”.

These are all the new rules for Waaagh!Paca 2015. In the next few weeks I will be examining the six new scenarios that are going to be played.
